Immigration has been a very hot topic for years now, and the national issue doesn’t seem about to cool off anytime soon.  Almost everyone in the U.S seems to have a strong opinion on immigration, because it’s hard to live anywhere in the United States and not be affected by immigration.  Of course most Americans aren’t first generation immigrants, but there are so many immigrants throughout the US today that immigration issues impact life throughout the country on a daily basis.

While there is a real lot of stress, concern and anger over immigration, I really think most people just don’t know much about legal US Immigration.  They know some people are legal, and they know some foreigners lack legal status.  Also most Americans seem to have an already set opinion on immigration, which usually translates to being “pro-immigrant” or opposed to increased immigration.  And they know how people get here illegally by crossing over the Mexican-American border.  Yet, most Americans I talk to seem to have no idea how foreign citizens are able to enter legally, more or less what they have to do to keep their legal status.  And why would they?

The point of this book is to show a few things.  Initially, the United States is the best country on Earth, that's an understood given.  Still like every country the US does have some problems, and one of these problems happens to be that our legal immigration system is broken.  Americans who are liberal and conservative both often agree that our immigration system is broken due to millions of illegal residents in the US, but they very have different opinions on how that problem should be fixed.

Sometimes people break immigration laws that are so minor it is practically pointless, which is similar to an individual who doesn’t come to a complete stop at a stop-sign when no one else is around.  On other occasions, our immigration laws are completely broken through highly fraudulent applications, as foreign citizens work to gain and remain in legal status.
